MADE IN RATIO PRESENTS EQUILIBRIUM AT FUORISALONE 2017

FUORISALONE 2017 March 21, 2017

Made in Ratio returns to via Palermo, in the heart of Milan’s Brera district to present Equilibrium for Fuorisalone 2017.

Celebrating Made in Ratio’s fifth exhibition at the annual Italian design event, designer and founder Brodie Neill will take a week-long residency in a Milanese boutique to launch four new designs presented alongside some of the company’s most recognised pieces.

Neill will launch the Stellarnova table, an evolution of the award-winning and now iconic Supernova table, with its signature sculptural elegance and modularity.

The biomorphic forms of the elegant legs are inspired by nature and sand cast in recycled aluminium in the UK. Designed with a triangulated attachment point, each leg is self-supportive with the tabletop, reducing overall material and resulting in a more refined aesthetic. Completely modular, the legs can be positioned with tabletops of any shape and size.

For Fuorisalone, Made in Ratio will launch Stellarnova with an environmentally sustainable bamboo multiply; more traditional tabletops in solid woods and stones will be added to the collection later in the year.

The Elements Light will also make its debut at this year’s Fuorisalone. A triangular solid marble base, an elongated, bent, stainless steel mast and a linear LED tube bulb are carefully arranged to create a dramatic juxtaposition of the three materials. Each element of the design has a clear purpose: the triangular base provides stability; the elongation of the mast suspends an illuminated canopy, while the unobscured bulb allows for the maximum amount of light to radiate all 360 degrees.

A continuation of the Elements family, the Elements table unifies three distinct geometries to form one function. The simple arrangement of a solid marble base and top, united by a stainless steel stem creates a carefully reduced form that is both elegant and anthropomorphic in silhouette. The almost primitive geometry gives the table a nimble versatility whilst being able to mix and match the tones of marble allows it to suit any interior.

Made in Ratio will also present the Alpha Leather, a new edition of its renowned solid-wood all-purpose chair, this time featuring a fine-leather seat pad for added comfort. The name Alpha is derived from the strong architectural gesture that gives the chair its inherent strength: the A shaped structure of the back legs and backrest. Bearing an almost seamless appearance in contrast to the more traditional joinery of chair design where each element is exposed, the chair organically and sensually moulds all the components into one.

MADE IN RATIO LAUNCHES NEW ELEMENTS TABLE AT BIENNALE INTERIEUR 2016

INTERIEUR 2016 October 10, 2016

International furniture brand Made in Ratio by Brodie Neill makes its debut at the Silver Edition of Biennale Interieur with the Elements table.

Harnessing an acute sensitivity to materials through the juxtaposition of a marble base, a stainless-steel stem and a solid wood top, the Elements table unifies three distinct geometries to form one function.

Each material was carefully chosen for its inherent value, which best fulfills its function: the marble for its stability, the steel for its strength and the wood for its tactility. The arrangement of the materials creates a carefully reduced form that is both elegant and anthropomorphic in silhouette.

Available in an array of wood finishes and stone bases, the table can be customised to suit any interior.

"The Elements table is an exciting new addition to the Made in Ratio collection, continuing the brands quest in applying traditional furniture materials in contemporary form. Each component of Elements utilises its unique material attributes applied to the stability, elevation and functionality of a simple yet charismatic table. It’s almost primitive geometry gives the table a nimble versatility whilst being able to mix'n'match the tones of marble and stained oak to suit any need.

Biennale Interieur has long been a favourite on the design calendar and I am pleased to be debuting new Made in Ratio designs as part of the silver anniversary edition"

MADE IN RATIO AT FUORISALONE 2016

FUORISALONE 2016 April 28, 2016

Made in Ratio created a moment of theatre at the Labo.art flagship store in Milan's Brera district. The tableau united the sinuous dynamism of Made in Ratio furniture with the minimal elegance of the Labo.art collection.

Our key focus at this year's FuoriSalone was the launch of the Cowrie Leather Chair. The gently folding monocoque structure features a moulded fine-leather seat-pad that mimics the contours of the chair's undulations.  Inspired by the concave lines of sea shells, the curvilinear form of the chair is the result of an extensive research and innovation process that bridges the handmade with the digital.

Additional designs on exhibit comprised key pieces from the core collection including the Alpha chair, launched to great critical acclaim at FuoriSalone 2015 and the versatile Supernova desk.

Following the success at the September edition of Maison & Objet, furniture brand Made in Ratio will return to Paris this January to present an updated collection by designer Brodie Neill.

The sculpturally dynamic installation featuring a three-tiered plinth made from Echo Panel, a completely reusable acoustic surface made from recycled PET plastic, will present three furniture ensembles.

Illustrating the versatility of the designs, the Supernova will be presented as both a high desk and a low coffee table, the Tetra modular shelving system will be showcased in a new configuration and stacked Alpha chairs will be displayed in multiple colourways and materials. The expanded Cowrie Collection will be presented including a Cowrie chair featuring a moulded fine-leather seat-pad that mimics the contours of the chair’s undulations. Made in Ratio will also introduce the Pleat bench, a graceful arch of thermoformed Corian, for the first time to the French market at Maison & Objet.

The collection presented at Maison & Objet will illustrate designer Brodie Neill’s ethos of researching and testing new possibilities of design and production and to fuse the precision of digital technology with the poetry of time-honoured materials and traditional craftsmanship.  By utilising advanced digital design, the products are imbued with a spirit of innovation and by working alongside some of the finest craftspeople in Europe and championing natural materials, the designs evoke an emotional connection that only products genuinely completed by hand conjure.

Designer and Creative Director Brodie Neill comments: “We were very pleased with the incredible response our debut presentation received at the recent September edition of the Fair. We look forward to returning to Paris later this month to have the opportunity to present a more dynamic installation and an expanded collection, which shows our commitment to innovative materials and environmentally sustainable design while maintaining a high level of style and quality”.

A BUSY YEAR FOR MADE IN RATIO

A BUSY YEAR FOR MADE IN RATIO December 24, 2015

2015 has been a great year for Made in Ratio. We were busy with trade fairs in Milan, Paris and London and to top it off an exhibition at the prestigious National Gallery Victoria in Australia. In between there has been numerous events and talks, not forgetting the development and launch of our newest product the Alpha Chair.

We were thrilled to return to Fuorisalone in Milan for the third year running and even more pleased at the incredible positive response to our installation from friends and clients, media and public, other designers and makers, and architects and buyers. It was the perfect place to launch our new product the Alpha chair and the response we got to the piece was phenomenal. The Alpha Chair has made a place for itself as one of Made in Ratio's stand out pieces due to its design and craft which organically and sensually moulds all the components into one, reinforcing our commitment to forward-thinking design.

The summer kicked off with Clerkenwell Design Week where we were asked to sponsor and design The Green Room for Conversations at Clerkenwell at Design Factory. The programme of talks at the Farmiloe Building has become an important arena in which to introduce and discuss new products, raise industry issues and network with fellow A&D professionals so we were more than happy to give our support. The Green Room by Made in Ratio was a bespoke installation of our critically acclaimed Cowrie Chairs and Supernova coffee table where speakers relaxed before and after their talks.

September was an incredibly busy month starting off with our debut at Maison & Objet in Paris. It was an incredibly hectic weekend and a fantastic opportunity to meet retailers, architects and other designers from Europe and Worldwide. Alongside the Alpha chair other notable pieces on show included the Cowrie Chair and Rocker, the award-winning Supernova Table and the modular Tetra Shelf, which we unveiled in Walnut. Our Tetra shelves in Walnut have proved incredibly popular and are quickly becoming one of Made in Ratio's most popular pieces.

Mid-September saw the unveiling of an exhibition of Made in Ratio and Brodie Neill designs at the National Gallery Victoria in Melbourne which resulted in our first museum acquisition of the Made in Ratio collection. We're thrilled that the Cowrie Rocker is now part of the museum's permanent collection and will sit alongside the likes of Lockheed Lounge and other great objects of design that make up the prestigious collection.

A very-busy September finished with Made in Ratio making a return to designjunction for the third consecutive year. We were very excited to be part of the new era of the fair at the former Central St Martins art & design school and greatly enjoyed presenting the Made in Ratio collection in such a creative and inspirational building.

We're very much looking forward to another busy year as 2016 fast approaches. We're busy at work planning our stand for the upcoming Maison Objet in Paris in January 2016 and have many more exciting projects on the horizon.

Happy New year from everyone at the Made in Ratio studio.

Made in Ratio will return to designjunction next week for the third consecutive year where we will present a conceptual room-installation, recreating the flexible living-dining-working space of the modern home within the old Central St Martins building.

The key focus for our installation will be the international launch of the production-ready Alpha Chair that was presented as a prototype at FuoriSalone earlier this year. We will also unveil the Tetra modular trapezoid shelving unit in solid Walnut, which can be used as a single unit or built up to create endless configurations to suit any space. The installation will present celebrated designs from our collection designed over the last three years, including the Cowrie Chairs, the Supernova Table and the Pleat Bench.

Presented as theatrical vignettes, the exhibition concept will showcase the versatility of the Made in Ratio furniture; for example, the Supernova table can be used as a high dining table or work desk or a low coffee table. Equally, the new Alpha Chair is a solid-wood all-purpose chair suitable for dining, living and work environments.

We are very excited to be part of the new era of designjunction at the former art & design schooland showcase our collaborative and explorative approach to design. Our installation will convey our fascination with achieving a precise balance between boundary-pushing design and traditional craftsmanship, natural and manmade material, artisan processes and cutting-edge technologies.

Made in Ratio will present its critically acclaimed collection by Brodie Neill for the first time at Maison & Objet in Paris this September.

The installation will showcase the company’s unique collaborative and explorative approach to design and the brand’s quest to push boundaries in terms of design and material usage.

Made in Ratio will present the production-ready version of the new Alpha Chair at its Maison & Objet debut. The new Alpha Chair is a solid-wood all-purpose chair produced using the latest production technologies of shaped wooden furniture. The name Alpha is derived from the strong architectural gesture that gives the chair its inherent strength: the A shaped structure of the back legs and backrest.

Through the Alpha Chair, Made in Ratio has explored the use of CNC routering technique as a high-production tool rather than a prototyping technology. Additionally, the design utilises digital sculpting, taking away the reliance on moulds. By adopting contemporary digital processes of design and manufacture, the Alpha Chair takes on an almost seamless appearance in contrast to the more traditional joinery of chair design where each element is exposed. The chair organically and sensually moulds all the components into one.

Other notable pieces on show will include the Cowrie Chair and Rocker, the award-winning Supernova Table and the modular Tetra Shelf.

The Cowrie Chair and Rocker are inspired by the concave lines of sea-shells. The curvilinear forms are the result of an extensive research and innovation process that bridges the handmade with the digital. Sweeping lines are displayed in a gentle, single surface monocoque fold. The all-in-one structure of the elegant easy chair and rocker is formed in ash faced plywood with either a natural or ebonised finish.

The Supernova is a completely dynamic, self-levelling table frame, cast entirely from recycled aluminium. Exceptionally simple to orientate, the star shaped structure can be positioned freely to create a dynamic sculptural shape.

The Tetra modular shelving system is available as both a flexible storage system or as a pre-set composition. A modular trapezoid cell, it can be used as a single unit or built up to create endless configurations to suit any space.

MADE IN RATIO RETURN TO FUORISALONE

RETURN TO FUORISALONE April 27, 2015

Last week, Made in Ratio took residence in a dramatic Milanese building with exposed bricks and high-vaulted ceilings, originally built in the 17th Century as an icehouse and modified into a family-run wood workshop almost 100 years ago. It was in the heart of Brera on via Palermo 11 that we launched the Alpha Chair.

Over the last 12 months, we had felt that our carefully considered collection needed an all-purpose chair. It was a product that we had not yet considered and for which we were increasingly receiving requests from clients. So we set about creating one.

The resulting Alpha chair is a solid-wood all-purpose stackable chair, equally fit for purpose at a dining table in a restaurant or a desk in a home-office. The name Alpha is derived from the strong architectural gesture that gives the chair its inherent strength: the A shaped structure of the back legs and backrest.

As with all our designs, the Alpha chair explores the latest production technologies. We have used digital sculpting, taking away the traditional reliance on moulds and CNC routering as a high-production tool rather than a prototyping technology. Both have allowed us to create an almost seamless appearance in contrast to the more traditional joinery of chair design where each element is exposed. The chair organically and sensually moulds all the components into one, reinforcing our commitment to forward-thinking design.

We were thrilled to get an incredibly positive response to our installation from friends and clients, media and public, other designers and makers, and architects and buyers.

A successful Salone behind us, our work is not done. The interest in the Alpha chair has been phenomenal and we are now actively working on getting the chair ready for production by the end of summer.

DNA OF THE SUPERNOVA

DNA OF THE SUPERNOVA February 11, 2015

Despite being the most abundant material in Earth's core, aluminium is in fact created during a fusion of hydrogen and magnesium in large stars in the atmosphere, also known as supernovae. This was the inspiration and namesake of the Supernova trestle. Along with understanding the superiority of nature comes a great amount of respect for it, which was present throughout our design process.

The Supernova trestle is formed by pouring 100% recycled molten aluminium into a sand casted mould, combining an ancient manufacturing process with a keen awareness of environmental sustainability to produce a modern product with a long lifespan. Through technological advancement, new life has been injected into the ancient sand-casting process. The trestles are produced in a foundry focusing on closed loop manufacturing where scrap metal enters and cast finished products leave.

Mimicking its chemical makeup, the star shaped trestle can be positioned in various multiples and orientations, while constantly maintaining its dynamic structure. The trestles are juxtaposed against architectural glass creating a moment of organic essentialism which each component relies on the other to form a sculptural yet functional piece of furniture.

Aluminium grew in popularity in the 1960s due to the rise of the beverage can. The modern day recycling of post-consumer aluminium products saves an equivalent of the entire annual power consumption of the Netherlands.

When recycled, aluminium retains all of its natural qualities, allowing it to be endlessly repurposed. Due to its strength and versatility, aluminium is used for products in numerous industries including transport, electrical as well as building and construction.

DNA OF THE MATRIX

DNA OF THE MATRIX November 5, 2014

Everything in nature, down to a single organism, relies on the concept of creating a ratio of logarithmic repetition, allowing subtle variations to become complex forms. Mimicking nature's path, the Made in Ratio Matrix is parametrically proportioned as a continuous thread of steel weaving through itself with a gradually expanding form.

The evolution of the Matrix resembles that of the ever-adapting bromeliad, found in the heart of South America. Bromeliads can grow terrestrially (on the ground), saxicolously (on rocks), and epiphitically (on plants and trees). True forces of nature, over 2700 species exist. Our two examples are the Alcantarea Imperialis, commonly known as the Giant Alcantarea and the Aechmea Nidularioides, a variety of what is commonly known as the urn plant.  The latter is also related to Tillansia Usneiodes AKA Spanish moss, a clustering air plant that helped define the Made in Ratio stand during Design Junction back in September.

MADE IN RATIO LAUNCHES ALCHEMY AT NEW SHOREDITCH SHOWROOM DURING LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL

LAUNCHES ALCHEMY September 9, 2014

Emerging design brand Made in Ratio launches its new showroom (with design studio above) in the heart of Shoreditch with opening installation, Alchemy, during this September’s London Design Festival.

Established in 2013 by Creative Director and Designer Brodie Neill, Made in Ratio embraces honest design, endeavouring to produce exceptionally made products that convey quality and originality throughout each of the collections and is fast earning a reputation for design excellence.

Entitled Alchemy as a richly layered reference to Made in Ratio’s unique collaborative and explorative approach to design and the brand’s quest to push boundaries in
terms of design and material usage.

Inspired both by nature and mathematical geometry, Alchemy will explore the incredible narrative behind each design: a fascinating ‘scientific’ balance between forward-thinking design and the heritage of craftsmanship, natural and manmade materials, artisan
processes and cutting edge technologies.

Alchemy further explains the selection of pieces on display: a combination of Made in Ratio’s two collections that are designed to complement one another in domestic and commercial settings - the whole greater than the sum of its parts.

“Made in Ratio has had a fantastic first two years. This move to our new home in Shoreditch is a really exciting moment for the expansion and development of the brand giving us much-needed space in which to grow the studio and a dedicated platform to showcase Made in
Ratio’s collections,” says Creative Director and Designer Brodie Neill.

“We’re launching the ground floor showroom with Alchemy, a selection of Made in Ratio pieces that display the coming together of form, material and process. The installation’s title, Alchemy, represents the experimental approach both in method and material that has become synonymous with the brand. Tried and tested materials such as bent plywood and tubular steel are reinvented through the aid of state of the art techniques whilst new
materials build on the heritage of craftsmanship,” Neill explains.

Alchemy will also debut the new raw aluminium finish of the award-winning Supernova table, which is cast from 100% recycled aluminium in the UK.

MADE IN RATIO AT MILAN DESIGN WEEK

MILAN DESIGN WEEK April 23, 2014

After months of preparation and hard work the Made in Ratio team proudly launched their new collection at Milan Design Week in Brera. We've had an overwhelmingly positive response to the new products are would like to thank everyone that came to visit our showroom, and all those that came to make our breakfast talks a huge success.

Collection 2 comprises of five new pieces featuring new materials and cutting edge processes whilst also reinterpreting more tried and tested techniques. With forms inspired by nature and mathematical geometry, the new pieces compliment those of the first collection.

The Stem Stool has a sculptural simplicity yet functional elegance. The cast 100% recycled aluminium element swivels and encompasses the stem, footrest and seat in one gesture. Designed for the contract market, the singular biomorphic form swivels on a cast aluminium base.

New materials and processes such as thermoformed PET felt have been utilised to striking effect. The Pik stackable stool, for example, is made from recycled drinking bottles and is also 100% recyclable itself. Stackable in multiples, Pik is ideal for both contract and domestic use in a variety of spaces.

Tetra, a new modular shelving system, has been designed to offer endless possibilities. It builds on the ideas of multiples, creating a range of functions from a repeated unit. The name comes from the tessellation found in the scales of a tetra fish but also references the retro computer game Tetris with its interwoven building blocks. Each unit is made from European White Oak fashioned into perfectly proportioned trapezoid that can be stacked and repeated to create a multitude of functional configurations.

The Prism coffee table has a geometrically configured base made from a mirror polished stainless steel tubular frame formed into a sculptural triangular structure. The visual vortex-like prism is finished with a round-edged toughened glass top. The fifth and final piece is the Pleat Bench, moulded from a single piece of Corian and named for its almost effortless overlapping of material to create a sturdy yet elegant silhouette. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, Pleat represents material-driven design in its simplest form.

We're pleased to announce that Made in Ratio will show new pieces alongside its debut collection of furniture and lighting in Stockholm this February during the city's furniture and lighting fair.

Our first collection is created with the spirit of innovation and comprised of four categories - lighting, seating, tables and storage, underpinned by the ideas of movement and modularity. New Cowrie seating options included warm wood veneers, bright lacquers such as teal and outdoor finishes.

“The material and production process of the Cowrie Chair and Rocker were inspired by the pioneering period of the 1950’s when leading designers endeavoured to realise the all-in-one plywood chair,” says Creative Director Brodie Neill, “The Cowrie collection very much honours that tradition but pushes it into the 21st century by merging tried and tested techniques with digital innovation.“

MADE IN RATIO LAUNCHES AT SALONE DEL MOBILE

DETAILS MAGAZINE December 2, 2013

FORMED INTELLIGENCE - INTRODUCING MADE IN RATIO

New London-based design brand Made in Ratio will debut at the Salone del Mobile with a boundary-pushing collection of furniture and lighting.

Embracing experimental processes, whilst championing time-honoured materials and working alongside some of the finest craftspeople in Europe, Made in Ratio’s products are imbued with the spirit of innovation. The company was forged with a desire to take exceptional ideas from inception to production. “We’re aiming to deliver thoughtful, quality design unencumbered by industry conventions,” says creative director Brodie Neill.

Launching at the Zonca & Zonca gallery, located at the centre of the Brera design district, the Made in Ratio exhibition will comprise of a series of installations, designed to showcase the unique qualities of each piece. True to the company’s founding manifesto of ‘formed intelligence’, the designs will all have purpose and relevance, outstanding craftsmanship and beauty of form.

“The designs re-think the production process.Invariably, the rigours of this challenge make the end result infinitely more interesting,” adds Neill.

LAUNCH COLLECTION

Comprising of four ranges; lighting, seating, tables and storage, the individual pieces have multiple applications, and are all underpinned by the ideas of movement and modularity. The Supernova trestle, for example, can be used in two different orientations and be configured as a coffee table, desk or dining table. Equally innovative in its production and versatile in application, is the Cumulus light shade. Hand-blown in Murano, the same bud-like structure of moulded glass ‘petals’ can be configured as a floor, table, ceiling, bedside and pendant light, illustrating its flexibility.

Drawing upon the inherent qualities of a classic material, The Cowrie Rocker and Cowrie Chair, take their shape from a single piece of plywood curved to a monocoque form. The Matrix coat stand, meanwhile, draws upon the mathematics at work in nature to help generate a harmonic pattern of openings, that not only hold a coat, but can also store a variety of objects, from umbrellas to footballs. “I have designed flexibility and versatility into the whole range. The idea is that these designs will become the cornerstones of future collections,” adds Neill, “Going forward, each collection will build on this, commissioning bright international design talent and allying them with peerless makers.”

The building was perfect to showcase the versatility of our contract ready lounge chair; residential, office and public spaces - not to mention the new outdoor finish.

In usual unglamorous photo shoot style, the team spent the day scrubbing windows, picking leaves from the courtyard, and gaffer taping bedspreads, but the resulting photos are so beautiful it really worth all the elbow grease! The evidence of our hard work was captured by a bad to terrible photographer from our MIR team in stark contrast to the expert skills of Peter Guenzel.

Q&A WITH BRODIE NEILL

Q&A WITH BRODIE NEILL May 6, 2013

Where are you based?

In Clerkenwell, London. I’ve been living in the UK for the past 8 years.

 Describe your design style.

Organic, sculptural, tactile. The designs are visually provocative but also engaging to the user.

Describe your studio/working approach.

Our approach is very much process lead design with a strong emphasis on form creation.  We also work to the nth degree, keeping true to the original idea and seeing it through to completion whatever it takes.

Tell me a bit about your educational background…

I grew up in Tasmania and studied product design there with a very hands-on, artisanal approach. The emphasis was on being a designer-maker and producing your own designs. You learned how to bring your ideas into being along the way and that’s stayed with me. As my designs are quite experimental in form, they are also quite experimental in how they’re made. As you design the form you’re also designing the process. I also did a master’s degree in the US at the Rhode Island School of Design and studied more digitally. Being able to explore complex 3D forms and virtual depth really expands the imagination. It’s good to learn how what you see on screen will sit in a physical space.

Name any brands you’ve designed pieces for (including your own) and collaborations

Kundalini, Domodinamica, Riva 1920, Swarovksi, The Apartment Gallery, Alexander McQueen and Made in Ratio.

What/who inspires your work?

My work is inspired by forms found in nature merged with a fascination of how we make things.  For this I admire the designers of the 50-60's, like the Eames or Verner Panton.  It was a period when organic forms were merged with industrial processes and often the realisation of a design was based on the endless pursuit of perfection.

What projects are you working on at the moment?

Refining the Made in Ratio launch product range, which will be shown as part of Design Junction during LDF. It’s a small, considered collection of 6 pieces that have many possible variations. The collection is built on movement, modularity and multiples. For example, the Cumulus light comes in desk, floor and ceiling versions. We’ve designed flexibility and versatility into the range and the idea is that these designs will become the cornerstones of future collections.

What does the next six months hold for you?

Growing the Made in Ratio brand, which I hope will become known as a source of well designed, innovative, beautifully made pieces that push the envelope in terms of what furniture can be. I’m also working with new manufacturers
